the what if

The what if hangs in the air
The mystery of the unknown
I can almost see it
I can feel it whispering against my skin
I can feel it twining around me
Like vines
I cannot resist the pull
And down, down I fall

Stranger

every day, you're there
standing on the street corner
never without headphones

scribbling on the backs
of empty envelopes
while you wait for a chance
to cross the street

sometimes, our eyes meet
you smile and duck your head
but by the time I reach the corner
you've already crossed

sometimes, through the passing cars
I catch glimpses of you
heading downtown

I don't know why, but
I wish I knew you
